The Art Institute of Vancouver Library carries many resources that cover a variety of topics such as Maya, drawing, rigging, storyboarding, anime, and much much more. Search the Voyager Library Catalogue to see what resources are available.

ANIMATION BOOKS

The Art Institute of Vancouver Library uses Library of Congress classification call numbers. Animation books are generally found in the call number range as follows:

N   Fine & Visual Arts: Theory & aesthetics of art, art philosophy, art galleries & exhibitions, art history, general works, artists & biography
NB   Sculpture: History, design & technique, restoration, materials, special types & forms (i.e. portrait, monuments, etc), models & modelling
NC 765 - 1428   Drawing, Design, & Illustration: History of drawing, artists and biography, techniques, graphic art materials, cartooning, drawing figures & anatomy,
NC 1765 - 1766   Traditional cartoon animation, animated films, animators, animation art
PN 6710 - 6736   Cartoons & comics, particular characters (e.g. The Simpsons, superheroes), & artists, history of comics, animated films & TV programs, Animation (cinematography), motion pictures - production, direction & design, storyboards, animation studios
QA 76   Nature of computers or ho-to books for various software programs, programming, multimedia systems (e.g. C++, Javascript)

Additional Animation & Modeling books can be accessed on the Library Database Safari Technical E-Books where you will find E-Books on the Adobe Creative Suites (Dreamweaver, Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.), Maya, and a range of other related subjects.

LIBRARY ONLINE RESOURCES (Subscription Databases)

The Art Institute of Vancouver Library is proud to offer a collection of excellent online database resources that will aid in almost all of your Animation inquires. These resources are available for all Art Institute of Vancouver staff, student, and faculty member and can be accessed both on campus and remotely from your home.  Brief descriptions of each resource along with the access web links are included below, along with various "how-to" user guides and manuals (indicated in dark red) that will help you use these databases. 

**Please note that you must obtain the necessary Access USER IDs & Passwords from the library to use these resources.  Please drop by at any Art Institute of Vancouver Library location, call, or email the library staff to obtain the necessary information.**

  • Digital Tutors - Please contact library if you need information as to how to create a user account
  • Access over 11,000 video training tutorials on Maya, ZBrush, Soft Image, Photoshop, Illustrator, and more for your design and digital media needs. To create your personal account User ID: current Ai Vancouver students, faculty, and staff must use their Ai email accounts (aii.edu / stu.aii.edu). Click on "Create an Account" and use the temporary password that is emailed to you by DT to log into your new account.
  • Firstcom Music
    UNLIMITED downloads and full access to Firstcom’s library of over 140,000 post production music tracks. Clips may be included in internet sharing, webcasts, postcasts, cellular and mobile devices and social networks; non-broadcast audio, video, digital media; corporate intranet, and/or closed circuit communications productions. Audio MUST NOT BE USED IN ANY PRODUCTION THAT IS SOLD!

    Getty Images User Guide (PDF)
    Over 500K high quality stock imagery. Students may download up to 50 high-resolution images and an unlimited number of low-resolution imagery per quarter. Images are for educational purposes only and using them for any commercial (even non-profit) or non-coursework or non-portfolio related purposes is strictly prohibited.
  • Gnomon Workshop - Access available through myaicampus
    Access over 300 online tutorials – that’s over 1000 hours of training – taught by the best in Visual Effects, Concept Design, Illustration, Modeling and Sculpture. Users should have javascript enabled, and their browser cookies preferences set to “accept all cookies.”
  • H. W. WilsonWeb Omnifile Full Text Select
    Periodical database that provides full-text articles with their accompanying indexing and abstracts on topics in the arts, applied and pure sciences, social science, education, humanities, legal and business fields. Contains full text of articles from over 2500 publications, some back to 1982.
  • Oxford Art Online
    A comprehensive collection of fine art and architecture images from many of the world's most prestigious art museums, and encyclopedia articles and entries from Groves and Oxford Reference.
  • Proquest Bigchalk Electric Library
    ELibrary offers a broad range of full-text and multimedia content, including a digital archive of information sources of more than 2700 full-text periodicals, international newswires, classic books, maps, photographs, and major literary, art, and reference titles.
  • Proquest “Big Bundle"
    One stop access to THOUSANDS of periodical magazine, newspaper, trade and scholarly publications including Proquest Research Library; ABI Complete which covers business, economics, product and competitive info, corporate and management techniques and strategies; National Newspapers 27 which provides articles from major regional dailies; and Proquest Psychology which encompasses a range of topics from over 500 leading psychology publications
  • Safari Technical E-Books
    Sample Searches Search Guide (PDF)
    # An electronic library collection of over 7800 e-books in a fully searchable database from Addison-Wesley, Peachpit Press, Adobe Press, and many other top technology publishers, covering Adobe, Maya, Photoshop, and much more.

  • Stash Online - Please contact library for access codes for remote (home) access
    Online archive of over 120 hours of streamable commercials, music videos, broadcast design clips, virals, game cinematics, short films and Behind the Scenes features showcasing the best in animation, VFX, motion graphics and digital effects. Requires Quicktime. Free access on campus - click on IP-Based Login to the right on the home page - username email and password required for remote access. Videos will not play on Internet Explorer 7. Please use Firefox, Safari, Chrome or another version of IE.
MEDIA COLLECTIONS (DVDs, Sound Effects, Stock Footage, etc.)
  • DIGITAL JUICE (DJ)Sound Effects, Animation, Stock Footage, and more. The Digital Juice collection is one of the few electronic resources that can not be access online. In order to search the collection and/or access files, you must use one of the three library computers that are housing the DJ collections.
