ELECTRONIC RESOURCES & DATABASES

The Art Institute of Vancouver's Library is proud to offer a collection of excellent online databases for you to access 24 x 7 from school or from home.

**Please note that you must obtain the necessary Access USER IDs & Passwords from the library to use these resources.  Please drop by at any Art Institute of Vancouver Library location, call, or email the library staff to obtain the necessary information.** 

If you know the name of the database that you want, you can find it alphabetically:
  • BUBL Information Service
    A catalogue of select internet resources that cover all academic subject areas. Users can search by alphabet, subject, country, media type, or Dewey Decimal Classification number for a wealth of topics ranging from computing, to animals, art, and linguistics.

  • Canadian Encyclopedia
    The Canadian Encyclopedia (TCE) provides comprehensive, objective, and accurate information on Canada for students, readers, and scholars across Canada and throughout the world on topics including business, biographies, technology, music, film, and much more. TCE includes the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada which covers the historical and current aspects of popular, folk, religious, concert, and other forms of Canadian music.
  • Encyclopedia Mythica
  • The Encyclopedia Mythica is an on-line encyclopedia on mythology, folklore, and legend. It contains hundreds of definitions of gods and goddesses, supernatural beings, legendary creatures and monsters from all over the world." There are over 200 mythology images on the site.
  • Fashion Snoops - Please contact library for access codes
    User Guide (PPT)
    Fashion Snoops is an online forecasting service that provides inspiring content, research and strategic guidance to companies in the fashion industry. Its coverage includes lifestyle trends, runway, retail, street, vintage, trade shows, happenings, market intelligence, news and editorials. Though focused on fashion, Fashion Snoops also provides content in areas of interest to Interior Design and Graphic Design, such as research in emerging trends, design and color direction, graphics and fabrics.

    Getty Images User Guide (PDF)
    Over 500K high quality stock imagery. Students may download up to 50 high-resolution images and an unlimited number of low-resolution imagery per quarter. Images are for educational purposes only and using them for any commercial (even non-profit) or non-coursework or non-portfolio related purposes is strictly prohibited.
  • Grove's Dictionary of Art / Oxford Art Online - Please contact library for access codes
    A comprehensive collection of fine art and architecture images from many of the world's most prestigious art museums, and encyclopedia articles and entries from Groves and Oxford Reference.
  • Hoovers Company & Industry Online
    Hoover 's Inc., delivers comprehensive company, industry, and market intelligence that drives business growth. Its database of 12 million companies, with in-depth coverage of 40,000 of the world's top business enterprises, is the core of its business tools and services. Hoover 's editorial staff of some 80 editors and researchers brings vital business information and knowledge to its coverage, updating the site daily to bring our visitors and subscribers the most up-to-date business information in the industry.

    Quick Tips Search Guide (PDF) Full User Guide Tutorial (PDF)
    Periodical database that provides full-text articles with their accompanying indexing and abstracts on topics in the arts, applied and pure sciences, social science, education, humanities, legal and business fields. Contains full text of articles from over 2500 publications, some back to 1982.

    Intute is a free online service created by a consortium of seven UK universities that finds the best web resources for your studies and research.s Subject specialists from these univerisities and partnering institutions review and evaluate thousands of resources to help you choose key websites in your subject .

    Killer Tracks User Guide (PDF) What is production music? (PDF)
    Post-production audio resource. Users may download or stream audio clips ONLY from the NJJ library, discs 101 to the most current Killer Tracks CDs, and discs 185 to the most recent Network Music CDs. Clips may be included in non-broadcast audio, video, digital media, corporate intranet, and/or closed circuit communications productions. Killer Tracks MUST NOT BE USED IN ANY PRODUCTION THAT IS SOLD!
  • Leonardo Music Journal (LMJ)

  • Librarians Internet Index
    The LII contains over 20,000 entries of the best of the Web. Entries and featured collections are carefully selected, evaluated, and maintained by librarians and are organized into 14 main topics and nearly 300 related topics.

    Proquest Quick Reference Guide (PDF)
    One stop access to over 8500 periodical magazine, newspaper, trade and scholarly publications including Proquest Research Library; ABI Complete which covers business, economics, product and competitive info, corporate and management techniques and strategies; National Newspapers 27 which provides articles from major regional dailies; and Proquest Psychology which encompasses a range of topics from over 500 leading psychology publications.

    An electronic library collection of over 7800 e-books in a fully searchable database from Addison-Wesley, Peachpit Press, Adobe Press, and many other top technology publishers, covering Adobe, Maya, Photoshop, and much more.
  • Thomas Register of American Manufacturers (ThomasNet)
    A directory of companies and products manufactured in North America, including access to over 650,000 industrial companies, 20 million CAD drawings, and hundreds of searchable company product catalogues and website links.
  • VADS (The Visual Arts Data Service)
    This online resource for visual arts contains over 100,000 images that are freely available and copyright cleared for use in teaching, learning, and research.

    VTC provides online streaming access to over 81,000+ Flash and Quicktime video tutorials covering Animation & 3D, Audio, Business Applications, Graphics & Layout, Internet & Web Design, Multimedia & Film, and MORE!.
